MEASURED DRIVE TIMES

Turnleaf Location and Commute: Measured Drive Times, and Two Corrections

Eight destinations measured by road rather than repeated from a brochure, including the interstate exit that is closer on the map and further in the car, and two developer claims that do not survive checking.

Turnleaf sits on the Burnt Store Road corridor in unincorporated Charlotte County, southwest of U.S. 41. Most of what is written about its location comes from marketing copy rather than from measurement, so we measured it.

The figures below are road distances and free-flow drive times generated from OpenStreetMap-based routing, from 13168 Turnleaf Boulevard. They are approximate and free-flow: no live traffic, no seasonal load, no school-run peak. Between roughly January and April, Southwest Florida’s seasonal population adds real time to every one of these, particularly on U.S. 41 and I-75.

Method: road routing from 13168 Turnleaf Boulevard (26.84123, -82.00792), measured 14 August 2026. Free-flow, no live traffic and no seasonal adjustment. Treat every figure as approximate and add time for season, weather and construction on the corridor.

The interstate quirk worth knowing

Exit 158 (Tucker’s Grade) has the lower number and looks closer on a map. It is not. Our routing puts it at 12.2 miles and about 28 minutes, against 8.6 miles and about 20 minutes for Exit 161 at Jones Loop Road. Exit 161 is the practical interchange from Turnleaf in almost every case, including northbound trips.

The reason is the road network rather than the geometry: getting from the Burnt Store corridor to I-75 means working back east across a limited number of connections. It is a small thing, but it is the kind of small thing that costs you sixteen minutes a day for a decade if you get it wrong.

Two claims in the marketing that do not hold up

We would rather correct these carefully than let them sit, because both are the sort of thing a buyer plans around.

1. Punta Gorda Airport is about 10 miles away, not 10 minutes

Developer material describes Turnleaf as “10 minutes from Punta Gorda Airport.” Our routing puts PGD at 10.2 road miles and roughly 22 minutes.

This looks much more like a transcription slip than an attempt to mislead: 10 miles is very close to correct, and it would be an easy error for “miles” to become “minutes” when copy is rewritten. The distance figure is right; the unit is not. It is worth flagging anyway, because a 22-minute airport run is a materially different proposition from a 10-minute one when you are catching a 6am flight, and because that claim has been repeated onward by other sites.

2. Cayo Costa is not minutes away, and it has no road

Marketing for the community mentions that “Cayo Costa, Captiva and Sanibel are minutes away.” Cayo Costa is a Florida State Park on a barrier island, and per Florida State Parks it is accessible only by boat or kayak. There is no bridge and no road. No drive time to it exists at any distance.

Sanibel and Captiva are reachable by road, via Fort Myers and the Sanibel Causeway. We have not measured them, so we will not publish a number — but for scale, our measured drive to Fort Myers Beach alone is 36.8 miles and about 63 minutes, and the Sanibel route runs further south and west before it turns back out to the islands.

The plain version: Turnleaf is not a beach community, and marketing that implies otherwise is describing a boat trip. The nearest drivable Gulf beach is roughly 35 miles and about an hour, north to Englewood Beach or south to Fort Myers Beach. That is a perfectly normal Southwest Florida arrangement and plenty of people are happy with it — it is a day out, not an evening walk. Buy the community for the tax position, the price per square foot and the corridor, not for a beach you would visit six times a year.

What the location genuinely gives you

Setting the corrections aside, there is a real case for this position and it does not need embellishing.

What we have not measured, and will not guess

We have not measured the drive to the nearest supermarket, hospital, urgent care, pharmacy or school from Turnleaf, and we are not going to estimate them. The Burnt Store corridor is actively developing and retail arrives and moves; a number invented today would be wrong within a year and might be wrong today. If any of those distances is decisive for you, drive them yourself at the time of day you would actually be doing it, or ask us to measure them properly against a specific homesite.

Questions people actually ask

How far is Turnleaf from downtown Punta Gorda?

8.1 road miles, about 16 minutes free-flow, measured 14 August 2026 from a Turnleaf Boulevard address. The developer’s “7 miles” is a fair straight-line description. Add time in season, when U.S. 41 carries considerably more traffic.

Is Turnleaf really 10 minutes from Punta Gorda Airport?

No. PGD is 10.2 road miles and roughly 22 minutes from Turnleaf on our routing. The developer’s “10 minutes” claim appears to be a transcription error for 10 miles, since the mileage is close to correct. Plan a 22-minute drive, not a 10-minute one.

How long does it take to get to RSW from Turnleaf?

Southwest Florida International is 35.7 road miles and about 50 minutes free-flow. The developer’s “less than 40 miles” description checks out. Allow more in season and at peak, particularly on I-75 south.

Which I-75 exit should I use from Turnleaf?

Exit 161 at Jones Loop Road: 8.6 miles and about 20 minutes. Exit 158 at Tucker’s Grade has a lower number and looks nearer on a map, but our routing makes it 12.2 miles and about 28 minutes because of how the corridor connects back east.

How far is the nearest beach from Turnleaf?

About 35 miles and roughly an hour in either direction: Englewood Beach on Manasota Key at 34.5 miles and about 59 minutes to the north, or Fort Myers Beach at 36.8 miles and about 63 minutes to the south. Turnleaf is an inland community; the Gulf is a day trip, not a short drive.

Are Cayo Costa, Captiva and Sanibel minutes away, as the marketing says?

No. Cayo Costa is a Florida State Park reachable only by boat or kayak — there is no bridge and no road, so no drive time exists. Sanibel and Captiva are reachable by road through Fort Myers and over the Sanibel Causeway, well beyond the 63 minutes our routing gives Fort Myers Beach. The islands are genuinely part of the region’s appeal; they are not close.

Is Turnleaf in Punta Gorda?

It has a Punta Gorda mailing address but it is in unincorporated Charlotte County, outside the city limits. That is why the City of Punta Gorda’s 3.8686 mills does not appear on the tax bill, leaving a 2025 total of 15.0855 mills for this tax district. It also means city services and city code enforcement do not apply.
